Welcome to ASUSS

Academic Staff Union of Secondary School (ASUSS) was formally registered and incorporated as a National Welfare or Trade Association with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) Abuja on the 9th of March 2001 to represent the interests and welfare of Secondary School Tutors in Nigeria. It was formerly known and addressed as Conference of Secondary School Tutors (COSST). In a similar vein, COSST was accepted as a Senior Staff Association and admitted as a member of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in June 2004.

In 2005, the group underwent a transformation and became the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS). The union was formed to address specific issues that Nigerian Secondary School Tutors, who are senior staff members with salary grades of 07and above and who began their careers in the midst of the Nigerian educational system, were facing.

ASUSS was founded for a number of reasons, including the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) being insensitive, unresponsive, contradictory, and self-centered to the needs of a sizable portion of its members and financiers. Despite its numerical and financial strength, NUT was perceived as being docile regarding the general welfare of its members.

ASUSS was founded out of a desire to provide Secondary School Tutors in Nigeria a sense of identity, much like other senior staff associations in the educational sector, such as ASUP for professors at polytechnics and monotechnics and COEASU for lecturers at colleges of education.
