It was a carnival of a sort on Thursday,24th of June in the city of Markurdi, the Capital of Benue state as the foremost trade Union, Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools,ASUSS commissioned its world class secretariat.



The two story building with 30 office apartments and 2 event hall has been described as the biggest secretariat of a state Trade Union anywhere in Nigeria.

Inaugurating the building, the Governor of Benue State, Mr Samuel Ortom commended the leadership of ASUSS, saying such feet could only be achieved through frugal and discipline leadership.



The Governor who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon Terwase Orbunde noted with comendation the support the teacher’s union had been providing for its administration which has ensured industrial harmony in the sector.

Governor Ortom said, it was imperative for government to give adequate attention to public education to create access for all and sundry in the interest of Nigeria’s development.

He also pledged, “we shall look into some of the issues raised by ASUSS, particularly the area of teacher’s recruitment which is presently ongoing.”

The National President of ASUSS who incidentally belongs to Benue State ASUSS and under whose watch the edifice was completed, Comrade Pastor Sam Omaji was full of praises to God for the completion of the project.

In his address,Comrade Omaji also lauded the state Governor, members of his team in the education sector and teachers of secondary schools in the state for the possibility of the edifice.

Comrade Omaji pointed out the consistent of Benue State government in the payment of teacher’s salary since 2018 contributed immensely to the eventual completion of the project.
Some of the guests on the occasion also brought solidarity messages from across the country.

On of them is the Secretary General of ASUSS who doubles as TUC chair and ASUSS chairman Ekiti State, Comrade Sola Adigun who lauded the frugal management of resources by the leadership of ASUSS, the result of which the building is and many other welfare packages for members.

Comrade Adigun prayerfully gave assurance that, “very soon this joyous train of ASUSS will also move to Ekiti state to inaugurate our own state of the art Secretariat. We seek your prayers and other support in this regard”

Similarly, the TUC chairman in Kogi state who is also, the National Treasurer of ASUSS, Comrade Ojo Ranti Mattew added his voice to the solidarity message as he called on “secondary school teachers who were else where to join the progressing train of ASUSS.

The Chairman of ASUSS in Nasarawa State and ASUSS Deputy National President, Comrade Agbachi Gabriel also congratulated the Benue ASUSS for the feet.

Principals of Secondary schools in Benue state were marveled at what the meager contribution of teachers did with prudent leadership as confessed by Mr John Aba who is the president of ANCOPSS.

The event was attended by who is who in the Benue state Education sector, ASUSS and labour Unions leadership across the country.
